Congress Govt’s ‘Biryani Surrender’ – When Terrorists Got VIP Treatment!
In 1993, during the terrorist siege of the Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir, the Congress Govt’s chose VIP treatment over strong action. This incident is now known as the ‘Biryani Surrender.
📜 Let’s go back to October 1993.
The Hazratbal Shrine in Srinagar, located on the banks of the Dal Lake and revered for housing what is believed to be a hair of Prophet Mohammad, suddenly became the epicenter of a terrifying terrorist crisis.
👉 More than 40 Pakistani and Afghan terrorists, heavily armed with rocket launchers and machine guns, stormed into the shrine.
👉 Their first move was straight from the jihadi playbook — they used a religious place as a human shield and broke open the sacred chamber to take full control.
🧠 At that time, India had a Congress Govt’s under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, and Jammu & Kashmir was under President’s Rule. The Governor was Retd. General Krishna Rao, and his advisor was Retd. General M.A. Zaki.
💥 As the news broke, the BSF (Border Security Force) cordoned off the area. A commando operation was recommended to neutralize the terrorists and clear the shrine. But Congress leaders in Delhi were haunted by the ghost of Operation Bluestar.
They feared being labeled as those who “attacked a religious place” again.
🧎♂️ The government chose to surrender instead of taking decisive action.
👉 Senior bureaucrat Wajahat Habibullah was sent in as an intermediary.
👉 He folded hands and pleaded with the terrorists to surrender.
👉 They were asked to release the civilians — but the civilians refused to come out, as they were supporting the “mujahideen.”
🔌 The army recommended a “Black Thunder”-style siege:
👉 Cut off power and water, seal off toilets — just like the 1988 Golden Temple operation.
👉 The government initially agreed, but soon buckled under pressure from “human rights groups” and the Muslim vote-bank lobby.
👉 Protests began across the Valley under the pretext of “namaz”, and a BSF firing incident in Bijbehara killed 37 people.
🤦♂️ Congress then went into full appeasement mode.
👉 The BSF was withdrawn and the Army was deployed — so that BSF wouldn’t launch an unauthorized strike.
👉 The terrorists complained — “We’re out of rations.”
👉 The government said — “No problem, we’ll send biryani.”
🥘 First, biryani was sent from the government canteen — terrorists rejected it.
👉 Then it was sent from a five-star hotel in Srinagar.
👉 Along with it came Bisleri bottles, blankets, and quilts — full VIP service.
💡 The Army proposed: “Let’s hide 20 commandos inside the biryani van. We’ll finish it in 10 minutes.”
👉 The government replied — “No! That would be dishonest!”
📦 For 15 days, the terrorists were fed, pampered, and protected.
👉 Finally, the Congress Govt’s offered safe passage.
👉 “Just leave your weapons and go,” they pleaded.
👉 The terrorists responded — “We want to take our weapons with us.”
👉 The Congress government agreed.
🚶♂️ And then…
With AK-47s slung on their shoulders, the 40 Pakistani-Afghan terrorists walked out past Indian forces… untouched.
👉 The Army once again sought permission — “Let us shoot. None will escape.”
👉 The order from Delhi: “No. We gave our word.”
📌 The Result?
➡️ Terrorists received royal treatment and were allowed to escape.
➡️ Their morale surged.
➡️ Congress etched its name in history for the most disgraceful surrender in counter-terrorism.
🛑 Those who scream about “Kandahar” today must first explain the Hazratbal Biryani Scandal!
👉 Congress didn’t fight terrorism — it fed it!
👉 Giving safe exit and VIP treatment to 40 jihadis hiding in a mosque — was this not treason?
