A chapter erased from Indian history by the Nehru government
We’ve all been taught in our history books that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. But why were we never taught about the deadly assassination attempt on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on 14 May 1939 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat?
Why was this critical episode in India’s freedom struggle and post-independence narrative deliberately removed from history books by the Nehru regime?
What Really Happened on 14 May 1939 – The Day Sardar Patel Could Have Died
A major political event — the 5th Bhavnagar State Praja Parishad Convention — was held under the presidency of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on 14–15 May 1939.
As Patel arrived in Bhavnagar, a massive procession was organized. He sat in an open jeep, waving to the cheering crowds as the procession passed through Khar Gate Square.
But hidden inside the nearby Nagina Mosque were 57 armed assailants, carrying swords, daggers, and spears.
Suddenly, these “peaceful men” stormed toward Patel’s jeep with the intention to assassinate him.
The Ultimate Sacrifice – Two Young Heroes Gave Their Lives for Bharat Mata
Two young men — Bachubhai Patel and Jadhavbhai Modi — noticed the attackers and rushed to shield Sardar Patel with their own bodies.
- Bachubhai Patel was killed on the spot after being repeatedly stabbed.
- Jadhavbhai Modi succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
- These unsung heroes sacrificed their lives so that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the man who would go on to unify India — could live.
Their statues still stand at the exact location where they were martyred, a silent reminder of courage erased from public memory.
The Aftermath – British Investigation and Court Judgement
Following the attack, the British government set up a special court. After a detailed investigation:
- 57 individuals were arrested.
- 2 attackers – Azad Ali and Rustam Ali Sipahi – were sentenced to death.
15 others received life imprisonment, including:
- Kasim Dosa Ghanchi
- Latif Miyan Qazi
- Mohammad Karim Sipahi
- Syed Hussain
- Chand Gulab Sipahi
- Hasham Sumra Sandhi
- Lohar Musa Abdullah
- Ali Miyan Ahmed Miyan Syed
- Ali Mamad Suleman
- Mohammad Suleman Kunbar
- Abu Bakar Abdullah
- Lohar Ahmadiya
- Mohammad Miyan Qazi
They confessed in court that the attack was planned in retaliation for a speech Sardar Patel gave in Kolkata, criticizing the Muslim League.
Deliberately Deleted from History – Why?
After Patel’s death, the Nehru government systematically removed this incident from all official records and history books.
Why?
- To protect the image of “Muslim unity” during the sensitive post-Partition years?
- To discredit Patel, who was seen as a nationalist and a firm opponent of appeasement politics?
- Or to ensure that no future generation ever questioned the dangers of religious fanaticism?
Why This Matters Today
This is not just a tale from 1939. It is a cautionary message for today’s Bharat.
Just like in Haldighati, where Hindus fought on both sides, today too, some Hindus support divisive, anti-national elements — whether due to political greed or ignorance.
“The betrayal by Hindus led to 800 years of foreign Muslim rule. If we repeat the same mistakes, we may not just lose power — we may lose our existence and Sanatana Dharma itself. We will be remembered only in museums and history books.”
What We Must Do Now
- Share this truth – Spread awareness of this erased episode in every household, school, and social platform.
- Demand history correction – Petition education boards and government to include this in school curricula.
- Celebrate real heroes – Hold annual events to honor Bachubhai Patel and Jadhavbhai Modi.
- Resist selective history – Stand against any attempt to whitewash history or hide the truth for political correctness.
This is not just a history lesson. It is a wake-up call.
Let us ensure that Sanatana Dharma and Bharat Mata are never betrayed again.
Let us honor those who gave their lives to protect our leaders and our future.
