✦ Indus Waters Treaty – A Betrayal Written in History
In 1960, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, along with his irrigation, energy, and Waqf minister Hafiz Mohammad Ibrahim (a pre-independence Muslim League politician), gave away 80% of India’s river waters to Pakistan.
Nehru even told Parliament on 30 November 1960:
👉 “We cannot let Punjab in Pakistan suffer from drought.”
This statement became the justification to hand over five rivers’ lifeline waters to Pakistan, ignoring India’s own farmers.
Consequences were dare and immediate:
- Farmers of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana wept in Parliament as their water was handed away.
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then a young MP, confronted Nehru boldly.
- Parliament was not fully consulted before the treaty was signed.
- Pakistan was only demanding ₹60 crores, but Nehru gifted them ₹83 crores.
