Modi, Indus Waters Treaty, and the Forgotten Betrayal of Nehru

✦ Indus Waters Treaty – A Betrayal Written in History

In 1960, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, along with his irrigation, energy, and Waqf minister Hafiz Mohammad Ibrahim (a pre-independence Muslim League politician), gave away 80% of India’s river waters to Pakistan.

Nehru even told Parliament on 30 November 1960:
👉 “We cannot let Punjab in Pakistan suffer from drought.”

This statement became the justification to hand over five rivers’ lifeline waters to Pakistan, ignoring India’s own farmers.

Consequences were dare and immediate:

  • Farmers of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana wept in Parliament as their water was handed away.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then a young MP, confronted Nehru boldly.
  • Parliament was not fully consulted before the treaty was signed.
  • Pakistan was only demanding ₹60 crores, but Nehru gifted them ₹83 crores.

This treaty was nothing short of a national betrayal.

✦ How It Damaged India

  • Western Indian states were pushed into decades of drought and water scarcity.
  • India’s journey to food self-sufficiency was delayed by decades.
  • Pakistan, already richer than India at the time, became even stronger, while India remained dependent on foreign aid.
  • The treaty crippled Indian agriculture and pushed millions of farmers into hardship.

✦ Why It Became Pakistan’s Oxygen

The Indus Waters Treaty is not just about rivers—it is Pakistan’s oxygen supply.

  • Nearly 80% of Pakistan’s agriculture depends directly on waters granted under this treaty.
  • The food supply of millions in Pakistan is linked to India’s generosity.
  • Every time Pakistan funds terrorism in Kashmir or India, it does so using resources that flow from Indian rivers.

By continuing this treaty, India was unknowingly strengthening its biggest enemy.

✦ Modi Ji’s Corrective Steps

For the first time in 60 years, Modi Ji has shown the courage to challenge this unjust treaty:

The treaty has been suspended under his leadership.

  • The government is developing infrastructure to divert river waters back into Northern Indian states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir.
  • This move is not just about helping Indian farmers—it is about breaking Pakistan’s backbone.
  • If Pakistan loses Indus waters, its agriculture collapses. Without agriculture, its economy collapses. Without economy, its ability to fund terrorism collapses.

👉 In short, Modi Ji’s water policy is Pakistan’s nightmare.

✦ Congress vs Modi – The Clear Difference

  • Congress always prioritized appeasement of Muslims and Pakistan, even if it meant sacrificing Indian farmers.
  • Nehru’s decisions weakened India and delayed its growth by decades.
  • Modi Ji’s approach is India First—ensuring every resource of India benefits Indians first.
  • This is the difference between weak leadership and visionary leadership.

✦ India Rising – From Victim to Superpower

Thanks to Modi Ji’s leadership:

  • India is now the fastest growing economy in the world.
  • Authorities provide our farmers with their due share of water and resources.
  • Globally, nations recognize India as a strong, independent power that leads forums like G20, BRICS, QUAD, and UNSC.
  • Pakistan, once stronger than India, has collapsed diplomatically, faces economic bankruptcy, and relies on IMF bailouts.

This transformation is the result of a clear, nation-first policy.

✦ A National Awakening

  • The Indus Waters Treaty reminds us how Congress betrayed India’s farmers and strengthened Pakistan.

Today, Modi Ji has turned the tables:

  • By suspending the treaty, he has ensured India’s water serves India first.
  • By choking Pakistan’s water supply, he has delivered a non-military strike on Pakistan’s economy.
  • By prioritizing Indian farmers, he has restored faith in true national leadership.
This is not just about rivers.
  • This is about India reclaiming its rightful destiny as a global superpower.
