Sanatan Dharma and India’s Foreign Policy: Can Hindutva Become a Diplomatic Power?

Sanatan Dharma (Hindutva) is not merely a religious tradition but a civilizational philosophy based on compassion, coexistence, global brotherhood, and Dharma (justice and duty). In today’s world order, India is emerging as a global power. Can Hindutva strengthen India’s foreign policy and become a diplomatic force? This is a crucial question.

1. The Global Perspective of Hindutva: ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘Sarva Dharma Samabhava’

India’s foreign policy is deeply rooted in the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (The world is one family), which originates from Hindutva’s core teachings.

  • This philosophy strengthens India’s role on global platforms like the United Nations, G-20, and BRICS.
  • Due to its secular and tolerant nature, India can mediate and foster dialogue among different religions and cultures.

Examples:

  • Buddhist and Hindu Diplomacy: India has strengthened cultural diplomacy with Buddhist-majority nations like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, and Thailand.
  • Power of the Indian Diaspora: Millions of people of Indian origin across the world can serve as a cultural and economic bridge, enhancing India’s global influence.

2. From Soft Power to Hard Power: Hindutva as a Strategic Strength

India can transform its soft power (cultural and spiritual influence) into hard power (economic and military strength).

Soft Power Initiatives:

  • Promoting Yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian culture at a global level.
  • The recognition of International Yoga Day (June 21) by the United Nations is an example of this success.
  • Spreading Vedantic philosophy and Hindu teachings globally.

Hard Power Strategies:

  • Combining Hindutva’s tolerance with warrior spirit to shape a powerful defense and security policy.
  • Adopting both ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’ (May all be happy) and ‘Shathe Shaathyam Samacharet’ (Dealing sternly with the wicked) in diplomacy.
  • Strengthening the concept of Akhand Bharat (United India) both culturally and strategically.

3. Countering Islamic and Leftist Diplomacy Through Hindu Strength

The rise of Islamic extremism and leftist propaganda is posing a threat to Hindu civilization and Indian culture at the global level.

  • India must adopt a Hindu nationalist diplomatic approach to tackle such challenges.

Examples:

  • The abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir received global acceptance due to India’s Hindu-nationalist diplomacy.
  • The construction of the Ayodhya Ram Temple can be presented as a cultural renaissance on the global stage.

4. Hindutva and India’s ‘Act East,’ ‘Neighborhood First,’ and ‘Global South’ Policies

Integrating Hindutva into India’s foreign policy can provide strategic advantages in international relations.

Act East Policy:

  • Strengthening India’s Hindu-Buddhist heritage connections in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia).

Neighborhood First Policy:

  • Reestablishing Hindu influence in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Global South Leadership:

  • Expanding Sanatan Dharma’s reach in Africa and South America to position India as a global leader.

5. Hindu Nationalism: India’s New Identity on the World Stage

If India embraces Hindu nationalism as a diplomatic power, it can emerge as a strong alternative to China and Islamic extremism.

Key Strategies:

  • Strengthening global Hindu unity through religious tourism and cultural revival.
  • Incorporating Hindu warrior traditions (Chhatrapati Shivaji, Maharana Pratap, Guru Gobind Singh) into defense policies.

Proposed Reforms:

  • Developing a foreign policy based on Hindu nationalism.
  • Encouraging Hindu industrialists and technocrats to expand India’s global influence.
  • Establishing global Hindu media and think tanks to promote Hindu diplomacy.

Hindutva is not just India’s cultural identity; it has the potential to become its diplomatic strength.

  • By combining Sanatan Dharma’s tolerance with Hindu nationalism’s resilience, India can rise as a global power.
  • If India integrates Hindu diplomacy into its foreign policy, it will not only protect its national interests but also revive Sanatan Dharma worldwide.
