India has repeatedly expressed concerns over Khalistani activities in Canada and has urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to take strict action. However, Trudeau’s administration has been reluctant to take decisive steps, leading to increased tensions between India and Canada. Meanwhile, a recent survey has revealed how Canadians perceive Khalistani activities and Sikh separatism.
Canadian Public Opinion: A Clear Stand Against Khalistan
- 75% of Canadians believe that the government should not allow Khalistani activities to take place on Canadian soil.
- 72% of respondents stated that Canada should not be used as a platform to run an agenda against another country.
- 54% of people openly opposed Sikh separatist activities, while only 10% supported them.
- 68% of respondents agreed that allegations of India interfering in Canada’s internal politics are a matter of concern.
Are Khalistani Activities Affecting the Sikh Community in Canada?
The survey also examined how these activities impact the Sikh community in Canada:
- 30% of respondents believe that Sikh individuals face unnecessary scrutiny due to Khalistani activities.
- 33% rejected this claim, while 37% remained uncertain.
India-Canada Dispute: Two Different Khalistani Groups?
The survey also highlighted a perception among some Canadians that India views two distinct Khalistani groups as the same:
- One group supports Khalistani ideology without engaging in violence.
- The other group is involved in violent activities.
However, India maintains that the line between Khalistani separatism and Khalistani terrorism is blurred, and any form of separatist movement is a threat to the country’s integrity.
Should the Canadian Government Take Action Against Khalistan?
The survey results indicate that most Canadians are concerned about Khalistani activities and want the Trudeau government to take strict action.
However, a significant portion of the population also supports maintaining strong diplomatic relations with India.
The Nijjar Killing and Deteriorating India-Canada Relations
It is worth noting that relations between India and Canada have been tense since the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Canada accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s assassination, but has failed to provide any concrete evidence so far.
This survey clearly shows that Canadians are against Khalistani activities and want the Trudeau government to curb them.
However, Trudeau’s political compulsions and indecisive stance prevent his administration from taking strong measures.
To maintain good relations with India, Canada must adopt a firm policy and take concrete steps against Khalistani extremism.
