Whenever we talk about the giants of Indian industry, names like Tata, Birla, and Dalmia come to mind. However, Ramakrishna Dalmia, who once ruled India’s industrial landscape, has faded into the pages of history. What really happened that led to the downfall of a business tycoon worth one lakh crore, reducing him to a state of complete financial ruin due to Nehru’s political conspiracies?
Dalda: India’s First Vanaspati Ghee and Dalmia’s Empire
Hindustan Lever’s (now Hindustan Unilever) most popular product, Dalda, was first introduced to the Indian market by Seth Ramakrishna Dalmia.
He was one of the wealthiest industrialists of his time, with a business empire spanning newspapers, banks, insurance companies, airlines, cement, textiles, food products, and hundreds of other industries.
His immense wealth, influence, and nationalist ideology made him a key figure in Indian politics.
The Root of the Conflict Between Nehru and Dalmia
Ramakrishna Dalmia was a staunch Sanatani Hindu and a close associate of the renowned saint Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj.
In 1948, a political party named ‘Ram Rajya Parishad’ was founded, which emerged as the main opposition party in the 1952 general elections, winning 18 seats in the Lok Sabha.
The party’s primary agenda was opposing the Hindu Code Bill and demanding a nationwide ban on cow slaughter.
Dalmia financially supported this movement, which made Nehru personally hostile towards him.
Hindu Code Bill and President Rajendra Prasad’s Opposition
The Hindu Code Bill introduced provisions for divorce for Hindu women, which was strongly opposed by Dr. Rajendra Prasad (India’s first President) and several Hindu organizations.
The President refused to approve the bill, but Nehru, driven by his stubbornness, got it re-passed in both houses of Parliament.
This incident turned Nehru into a sworn enemy of Dalmia.
Nehru’s Strategy: False Accusations and Political Conspiracy
Nehru’s government fabricated financial fraud allegations against Dalmia and launched a campaign against him in Parliament.
A special commission was set up to investigate his companies, and later, the case was handed over to the Special Police Establishment (now CBI).
All government departments were instructed to harass Dalmia.
He was trapped in baseless legal cases and financially crippled.
Under Nehru’s political pressure, Dalmia was declared bankrupt, losing his massive empire.
He was forced to sell major businesses like Hindustan Lever and The Times of India at throwaway prices.
He was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison.
Dalmia’s Resolve and Ultimate Sacrifice
Dalmia vowed that he would not eat solid food until cow slaughter was legally banned in India.
He kept this vow until his last breath and passed away in 1978 while protesting against cow slaughter.
Nehru’s Pattern: Destroying Opponents
This was not the first time that Nehru systematically destroyed his political adversaries.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who opposed the Hindu Code Bill, was sidelined.
Subhas Chandra Bose, whose ideology differed from Nehru’s, was also isolated.
Now, history reveals how Nehru ensured the downfall of one of India’s greatest industrialists.
Lessons from History
Ramakrishna Dalmia’s story teaches us how political revenge can ruin even the most successful patriots.
Had Dalmia’s business empire survived, India’s economy might have been far stronger today.
Hindu nationalist entrepreneurs and leaders must understand how political power can sometimes be used to suppress true patriots.
Understanding the Impact of Nehruvian Politics
Today, as we discuss India’s economic and cultural heritage, it is crucial to acknowledge the hidden chapters of our history.
Dalmia’s sacrifice and Nehru’s political vendetta remind us that truth can be suppressed but never erased.
Now is the time to reassess history and recognize the contributions of nationalist leaders and industrialists who were strategically eliminated.
Let’s share this history widely and ensure that every Indian knows the truth!
