The condition of senior citizens in India is becoming more distressing by the day. Those who dedicated the best years of their lives to nation-building are now deprived of basic facilities and rights. Has being a senior citizen in India become a crime?
Recently, this critical issue was discussed in Parliament, where the neglect of senior citizens was strongly condemned. One MP sarcastically remarked:
“If the government cannot take care of people above 65 years of age, then they should just be eliminated.”
Though harsh, this statement reflects the harsh reality of suffering and insecurity that senior citizens face in India.
Major Problems Faced by Senior Citizens
1. Neglect of Healthcare Services
✅ Most insurance companies refuse to provide health insurance after the age of 70.
✅ The available insurance comes with exorbitant premiums, making it unaffordable for common citizens.
✅ There are no special government health schemes for senior citizens.
2. Financial Insecurity
✅ Senior citizens are not eligible for bank loans or EMI facilities.
✅ Declining interest rates on savings have drastically reduced their passive income.
✅ Even their pensions are taxed, worsening their financial situation.
3. Removal of Travel Concessions
✅ Earlier, senior citizens received up to 50% discounts on train and air travel, but these have been discontinued.
✅ Those without a stable income now struggle to travel long distances.
4. Lack of Employment & Social Security
✅ There are no employment opportunities for senior citizens, making them completely dependent on others.
✅ Senior citizens living alone have no government support system.
✅ There is no strong social security system for widows and helpless elders.
5. Injustice in Vehicle Scrapping Policy
✅ The rule to scrap private vehicles older than 10-15 years is unfair.
✅ Senior citizens use their vehicles sparingly, yet they are forced to buy new ones.
✅ If this rule continues, there should be exemptions for senior citizens.
India Must Recognize Its Responsibility Toward Senior Citizens
Developed nations have robust welfare schemes for senior citizens, including:
✅ Free medical facilities.
✅ Old-age pensions ensuring a dignified life.
✅ Special housing schemes to support independence.
✅ Social welfare programs ensuring care and security.
In India, senior citizens invest all their savings in their children’s education and well-being. But in old age, they receive neither societal support nor concrete government assistance.
India must implement welfare programs for senior citizens like developed nations. Additionally, the government should introduce better investment schemes and utilize the experience of senior citizens in social programs.
Essential Reforms for Senior Citizens’ Welfare
1️⃣ Universal Old-Age Pension Scheme
A monthly pension must be provided to all citizens above 60 years.
The amount should be determined based on their previous income and social status.
2️⃣ Restoration of Travel Concessions
Senior citizens should receive discounts on train, bus, and air travel.
3️⃣ Lifetime Health Insurance
The government must cover health insurance premiums for senior citizens.
4️⃣ Fast-Track Courts for Senior Citizens’ Legal Matters
Special courts should be established to expedite cases involving senior citizens.
5️⃣ Implementation of Special Housing Schemes
Safe and accessible housing for senior citizens must be built in every city.
6️⃣ Exemption in Vehicle Scrapping Policy
Senior citizens using their vehicles sparingly should be exempted from scrapping regulations.
Do Not Ignore the Political Power of Senior Citizens
“If the government continues to neglect senior citizens, it will face severe consequences in elections.”
The number of senior citizens in India runs into crores, giving them significant influence over election outcomes.
✅ They are the most experienced section of society.
✅ If they organize and vote collectively, they can bring about political change.
The government must understand that senior citizens are the heritage of India’s past and the inspiration for its future.
